Overview

Ice Cold Beer Arcade Game (Retro Arcade Remake) the 1983 Taito mechanical classic, rebuilt for modern reliability.

Ice Cold Beer is a faithful remake of Taito's 1983 mechanical arcade game, manufactured by Retro Arcade in the upper Midwest USA. The cabinet uses two joysticks to control a horizontal bar that balances a metal ball — the player carries the ball up a playfield full of holes and deposits it into the lit target. Round after round, the lit hole moves higher and difficulty increases.

The remake preserves the original gameplay character while addressing the failure points that plague surviving 1983 cabinets. Belt drives have been replaced with screw drives powered by stepper motors. The control electronics use a proprietary FPGA board to emulate the original mechanical logic exactly. Coin door and bill acceptor support is built in. A redemption option is available.

Construction

Built for the floor.

01FPGA-Emulated Original Gameplay

The cabinet's control logic runs on a proprietary FPGA board that emulates the original 1983 mechanical operation precisely — the ball physics, the lit-hole progression, and the difficulty curve match the Taito original.

02Screw-Drive Bar Motion

The horizontal bar is driven by screw drives with powerful stepper motors rather than the original belt drives. Belt drives are the primary failure mode on surviving 1983 cabinets — screw drives eliminate the issue entirely.

03Silk-Screened Original Art

The cabinet glass is silk-screened with the original Ice Cold Beer art — the same brilliant playfield graphics that made the game collectible. The cabinet panels match the 1983 industrial design.

04Sensors on Multiple Holes

The remake adds sensors on multiple playfield holes — not just the lit target — which enables expanded game modes the original cabinet could not support.

05Service-Friendly Construction

The cabinet was designed with technician input. Critical components are accessible without removing the playfield, and the wiring is laid out for technician access. Future game upgrades and competition play features are supported.

06Original Leaf-Spring Joysticks

The two control joysticks are original-style leaf-spring units — the same tactile character collectors prize on the 1983 cabinets. The remake does not substitute with modern microswitch joysticks.

Buyer's Guide

How to think about this purchase.

Ice Cold Beer is a niche cabinet, and that's the buying case. Mechanical playfield arcade games are nearly extinct — surviving 1983 cabinets sell at collector prices and require constant service. The Retro Arcade remake is the only commercially available source of new Ice Cold Beer cabinets.

Bill acceptor and coin door support is built in. The cabinet can be deployed as freeplay in a home game room or as commercial coin-op on a route — the same hardware supports both.

Operators considering redemption play should note the optional redemption build, which adds ticket-dispense hardware. Coordinate that option at order time rather than retrofitting later.

The small floor footprint matters. Mechanical playfield games typically demand significant floor space; the Ice Cold Beer remake keeps the original cabinet footprint, which fits arcade bars and route locations where larger redemption cabinets would not.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask.

Is this an original 1983 cabinet or a new build?

It is a new build by Retro Arcade. The cabinet, electronics, motors, and joysticks are all new. The game logic and play feel match the 1983 Taito original through FPGA emulation.

How does the new bar drive compare to the original belt drive?

The remake replaces belt drives with screw drives driven by stepper motors. Belt drives are the primary failure point on surviving 1983 cabinets — the new mechanism eliminates that wear pattern.

Can the cabinet be used for coin-op or freeplay?

Both. The cabinet is bill-acceptor capable for commercial coin-op deployment and can be configured for freeplay in home or freeplay-arcade environments.

Is a redemption build available?

Yes. A redemption configuration with ticket-dispense hardware is available — specify at order time.

Where is the cabinet built?

The Ice Cold Beer remake is assembled in the upper Midwest USA by Retro Arcade.

Are the joysticks the same as the original?

The cabinet ships with original-style leaf-spring joysticks that preserve the tactile character of the 1983 controls. Modern microswitch joysticks were not substituted.
