Overview

Hathaway 3-Inch Striker & 2.5-Inch Puck Set residential air hockey, factory-fit replacement.

The 3-inch striker diameter is the residential standard. It is the size every Hathaway air hockey cabinet ships with from the factory, and the size used by virtually every consumer table sold in the U.S. — Sportcraft, MD Sports, EastPoint, Triumph, and the cabinet-style multi-game units. Buying a 4-inch tournament striker by mistake is the single most common return reason in this category, because the larger mallet cup will not sit flat on a residential rail.

This is a complete two-player set: two 3-inch strikers and two 2.5-inch pucks, molded from ABS plastic, with felt-lined striker bases and finger-well grips. Drop-in compatible with any 6-ft to 7.5-ft residential air hockey table, and equally suited to push-hockey tables that run without an air blower.

Construction

Built for the impact loads that break cheaper accessories.

01ABS Plastic Body

ABS is the material air hockey strikers and pucks have used for four decades because it absorbs repeated rim impacts without splintering. Less expensive PVC and LDPE accessories develop hairline cracks within months of weekly play; ABS holds shape for years of family use.

023-Inch Striker Diameter

Three inches is the residential mallet specification. The striker sits flush in the playing zone, leaves the rail clear for legal angles, and weighs little enough that home blowers (typically 80–120 W) can clear the surface around it. A 4-inch striker disrupts both fit and airflow on a consumer cabinet.

032.5-Inch Puck Diameter

The 2.5-inch puck is the matched residential size. Its lower mass relative to a 3-inch tournament puck lifts cleanly on lower-airflow home tables, where a heavier regulation puck would skip and stick.

04Felt-Lined Striker Base

A felt pad is adhered to the underside of each striker. The felt prevents direct plastic-on-laminate contact, which is what scratches a playfield over time. The felt itself is the wear surface — when it thins, replace the set rather than the table.

05Deep Finger-Well Grip

The recessed thumb-and-finger pocket lets the player snap the striker laterally without losing contact at speed. Shallow-domed budget strikers slide off the fingertips during fast lateral defense; the deeper well in this striker holds grip through the full motion.

06Two Strikers, Two Pucks

The set is a complete two-player kit with one spare puck. Carry one set per table or keep one in reserve — pucks are the part most often lost behind cabinets and under furniture.

Buyer's Guide

How to choose air hockey strikers and pucks without ordering the wrong size.

Air hockey accessories are sold in two scales, and they are not interchangeable. The residential scale is 3-inch strikers and 2.5-inch pucks. The tournament scale defined by the United States Air-Table Hockey Association is 4-inch strikers and 3-inch pucks. Tournament strikers will physically not seat correctly on a residential rail, and tournament pucks are too heavy to lift on a home-grade blower. The fastest way to confirm the size you need is to measure the striker that came with the table — if it measures three inches across the cap, the BG1008 set is a direct replacement. If it measures four inches, you need the BG1005 pro set instead.

Replacement sets are also a worthwhile upgrade for tables that came with thin-walled factory accessories. The original strikers shipped with budget tables often crack at the rim within a year of regular play, and the felt bottoms wear through faster than the plastic. An ABS set with a fresh felt base restores the original fast-glide action and protects the playfield from the bare plastic of a worn-out striker. Order a second set if the table is shared by children, or used outside of climate-controlled space — humidity changes shorten felt life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Will this set fit my air hockey table?

If your table is a residential cabinet between 6 ft and 7.5 ft, this set fits. The 3-inch striker and 2.5-inch puck are the size used by Hathaway, MD Sports, Sportcraft, EastPoint, Triumph, and virtually every consumer-grade air hockey table sold through retail. Tournament tables built to USAA specification use 4-inch strikers and 3-inch pucks; for those, see BG1005.

What is the difference between a 3-inch and a 4-inch striker?

Diameter and intended use. Three-inch strikers are sized for residential tables with home-grade blowers in the 80 to 120 watt range. Four-inch strikers are sized for USAA tournament play on commercial 8-foot tables with high-output blowers. The two sizes do not interchange — a 4-inch striker will not seat correctly on a residential rail and will block legal striking angles.

Are these regulation-size pucks?

No. USAA regulation pucks measure 3 inches in diameter. The 2.5-inch puck is the residential standard, weighted to lift cleanly on lower-airflow home tables. If you are playing to tournament rules, order the BG1005 set with 4-inch strikers and 3-inch pucks.

Will the felt bases scratch the playfield?

No. The adhered felt is the wear surface that protects laminated and acrylic playfields from plastic-on-plastic contact. Felt thinning is normal over the life of the set — once the felt wears through to bare plastic, replace the set to keep the playfield protected.

Can I use this set on a push-hockey table that has no air blower?

Yes. Push-hockey tables use the same striker and puck dimensions as residential air hockey. The deep finger-well grip in this striker actually performs better on push-hockey because the lateral pushing motion benefits from the recessed pocket.

Is the set covered under warranty?

No. Strikers and pucks are consumable accessories and are not covered by warranty. Hathaway treats them as wear items in the same category as table-tennis paddles or pool-cue tips. Order a replacement set when the felt wears through or the strikers chip at the rim.
