Surface chips are visible — any ball with a chip larger than 1 mm should be replaced because the chip creates a consistent deflection point that disrupts roll. Roundness loss is invisible but detectable: a ball that wobbles slightly during a straight slow roll has developed roundness deviation and should be replaced.

The balls included with entry-level pool tables are typically economy-grade resin — harder and less polished than the Hathaway regulation set.
